Not in the slightest.
About 21,000 people die every day of hunger or hunger-related causes, according to the United Nations.
So if I had to really care about every person who I don’t know, who dies… I would care 21 000 times more about Africa than this celeb trial.

And currently, I’m expressing a complete lack of interest in this trial whilst making a a satirical reference to humanity’s inane obsession with things that really shouldn’t affect them.
Surely each and every one of those atrocities should be important and cared about? I’m not sure, often I hear this argument being put forward and I ask myself where that person is coming from.
There are certain people who really get involved in other causes and feel that this one has taken centre stage. To those people I really do get where they are coming from, and essentially they have a very strong argument. But for most , this argument seems to me as if they are pointing out that many care about this case, but no others, but surely that is better than the alternative of caring about absolutely none of them?
Hence the point that my entire blog boils down to:

What do you say to those who care deeply about those raped, robbed, murdered or starving to death on a daily basis? Those that follow as many of these stories as possible AND also find a massive interest in the pistorius case. Whether you think people should care about it or not, the very fact that it is so popular remains a fact, and remains so for a reason regardless of your sentiment. When a countries disabled star athlete, who stole the hearts of the entire planet shoots and kills another celeb, then yes its going to be news that draws massive public interest. I’m not sure if you are saying that this shouldn’t be big news, or if you are saying that you just don’t want it to be. But it clearly is of major public interest. Just another inward-facing self opinionated blog. Just imagine if everyone had one of these.

However, I can’t help but feel sad for the people involved in the “trial” as it’s a train wreck of a story. I am affected on an emotional level, but no more so than all the other terrible stuff going on in the world – crime, rape, abuse, animal cruelty. My only consolation is that there’s just too much good stuff in life to enjoy to be consumed by the bad stuff. Live, love, and do right by your own conscience.

A beautiful young woman lost her life. It is so so sad!!! BUT what I find more sad is the fact that when my amazing beautiful kind-hearted brother was murdered for NO reason, being at the wrong place at the wrong time, it didn’t even make the front page of the local news paper. He definitely didn’t get the best prosecutor, media coverage, a dedicated TV channel…..
Does this make him less valuable to society? Do we as his dad, mom and sister miss him less because he wasn’t a celebrity or because his murdered wasn’t a celeb….. NO
He was a son to 2 lovely parents, a brother to me and a friend to many!!! His life was just a valuable as reeva’s.
So excuse the people like me who think that this media spectacle is sad because we wish our loved ones were born in “the right” family or at least be a celeb………..

Firstly, the neverending blown-up media coverage of this inane trial has infiltrated every single sphere of existence.
Secondly, yes, it does put some international eye on the violence in SA, but not really from the right angle. I would LOVE for the whole world to see the senseless crime in our country. The murder, rape, assault, corruption etc… Somehow I don’t think this glamour-trial will lead to many people noticing that. Not sure… What do you think?
I’m a SA citizen too Baas, My feeling is that, that the biggest crimes are being committed by the governing power of this country. As a result corruption has filtered down into many levels of business, government as well as social sectors. Now I must put faith in a justice system that is run by the same group of corrupt people who have gone as far as changing the constitution to suit their own pockets, to make a ruling in this case that is unbiased and unswayed by the media or finance. I’m at a point were I honestly could not give a rats ass.
Personally I think the man is guilty and is probably going to get away with a slap on the wrist! (not that I am a forensics specialist or a criminal investigator, but from what evidence I have seen/heard and the history of gun slinging and violent behavior from Oscar, I think I’ve been around long enough to know the caliber of person with this kind of “do you know who I am?” behavior). I find your argument to be hypocritical. You complain about the people following the Pistorius case but then again aren’t you just as bad following those people following the case? If it bothers you so much then just carry on with your life and let them carry on with theirs even if they are following it. Am i the only one that dragged his mouse over and highlighted the points to see if there was some ‘hidden’ (white) text? 😛 Anyway, I do find the trial ‘interesting’, but then again I find the Housewives of New Jersey interesting to too so that’s not saying much. I think the reason people (or at least me personally) shift focus to trivial media like this vs the such atrocities as famine or war etc is because those things are a lot harder to face. It’s denial really; I don’t think it’s a case of who cares more about what…you have to almost consider this gossip. No one wants to gossip about things that really upset them. No one really gave a shit about Miley Cyrus shaking her ass on stage but it made for entertainment and this sadly is no different. It’s also just an outlet for people to vent I think. Personally, I escape reality with comedy and such. Even though I hold the real life shit such as wars etc in much higher regard than trivial entertainment, I only fill my mind with enough of it to be “in the know”.
I mean, wouldn’t want to get overly negative/depro now, would we?

I find it fascinating… The things your commentators read into what you are saying. And they get so excited about the mad, bad and sad things that came from their own minds, not yours. Guess there’s not much one can do about some people’s comprehension skills, or the lack thereof. I never comment on things like this, but suddenly I just feel the urge to laugh out loud at the human race!
I find it liberating/empowering to help release other’s thoughts. Sadly, not everyone can see the sentiment behind the words (or sometimes the lack thereof).
It is, however, still good to be even a small catalyst in helping people think a bit further than what the media tells them to…

This is a simple “wmurder case”. The victim, body, accused, murderer, weapon, rounds, cellphones etc etc was on the scene….. imagine the courtcase and facts the NPA needs to put together to proof that Lolly Jackson was shot by George Luka Smith, how much money have exchanged hands between government officials and these “mafia like” caracters, who shot 17 shots on a bike at Cyril Beeka, why, who wrapped up a body in bubble wrap and who is trying to kill poor Mr Radivan – who incidently bought Mr Beeka’s company for his son, who is now “patroling the Somalia coast”…. what and who will “cross examine” these contraversial issues – so if you think you know the law, try to think what Gerrie Nel needs to do to get criminals – alive and well and still operational – convicted…. ok, and then, the fact that it took a year to bring this really easy to proof case to court…. The NPA’s been trying to nail the richest most arogant government officials and drug-lords, mafia whatever to court for the last 7 years…. what will a witness remember 7 years after he/she made a statement (presuming they live to tell their story)?????

I agree with nr 6 the most… on a more serious note, I agree, this involves the families and friends, not everyone else… and is certainly not “the crime of the century”. Little kids being raped, a boy being drowned in a tub of boiling water after witnessing his mother raped and father murdered, why are these not also on their own channel. Crimes against our children are forgotten the day after the 5 second newscast (if it even makes it onto the news). Also why have so many people lost their minds? There is no doubt that this man Killed his girlfriend, the only question is if he did it intentionally or not… If he accidentally shot her multiple times through a bathroom door, he should go to jail for manslaughter, if he shot her on purpose he should go to jail for murder… there is no innocent here…
Can you imagine what impact even a 10th of the exposure this trial is getting, could mean for (for instance) children being molested in townships?
The only thing about this trial that really PISSED me off was the R1 million Bail that had to be paid! Baas i agree fully with you that this trial is a waste of time, energy and money. The sensationalizing of it and all the Media hype around it will not in a million years do anything of value. Not in S.A or U.K or where ever. What this trial should do if anything at all is highlight the fact that Justice is not free and fair for all. Equality is a word used in propaganda as in the up and coming elections. It is only a word to our power hungry politicians who use it in a sentence stringed together with other words of equal power to lure the POOR for VOTES. In the same way our JUSTICE SYSTEM uses it to sucker punch the poor who happen to walk into a court room innocent of a crime just to walk out found GUILTY due to a pathetic State Lawyer! There is NOTHING fair about this trial. Why on the day Oscar was given a R1 million bail did 4 Hijackers who murdered a man and his wife for a car receive R1000 bail each? REALLY!? I lost all faith in the so called justice system in this country years ago due to this kind of stuff. More recently cyclists attacked the driver of a mini van and sprayed him and his passenger with tear-gas. The footage went viral and since then i believe 3 of the cyclist involved have been arrested in CPT. We then have the MEC of roads pipe up and say that these men must be put into jail. People need to understand that you cannot go around committing road rage offences with out punishment. The punishment must fit the crime! All good for him to say this and I agree. But I bet if you asked the same man if we can then bring back the DEATH PENALTY then for all the convicted murderers he would say NO. So even his comment on the cyclists and their crime is not looked at with EQUALITY! further more I could not tell you on what Channel this JOKE is broadcast on. I actually stopped watching NEWS channels around 6 years ago. Yeah sure that keeps me uninformed but hell i live a much happier life not knowing.

I know how if feels to loose a loved one – but this isn’t the way to remember the victim, why aren’t all the profit made by broadcasting the trail, donated to care for abused people? Anyway, if you were to open your mind a bit, you’ll realise that this was not at all a post to say that death is good or unsad or anything. It was in fact, quite the obvious. A mockery of the trivialisation of murder, the glamorisation of legal proceedings and the subsequent self inflicted ignorance of things that actually matter.
I could not agree more that the televising is ABSURD!!!
I don’t think anybody thought about the fact that ALL EVIDENCE has to be brought to court and that every single portion of it needs to be documented and questioned and that televising it, WILL HAVE and HAS HAD AN IMPACT, and ONLY NOW do we actually come to a standstill that a body and injuries to the body needs to be exposed, and something like twitter will and can state content explicitly….
WHY DO WE JUST NOT STOP THIS…… Is the televising of this event making a difference??? If it mabe STOPS one or two people from murdering (now providing they do have a television and is not making use of the rain to execute such awful activities, while we are all fixed to the teles…), then yes, it may be worthwhile.
Some of you might have though I am a WARLORD, but to all of you following this blog – a murder trail is bad…. All “inquest dockets”, (for those of you who does not know what this means – an un-natural death docket”), requires the body to go to the State Mortuary and not gradually lifted in a hurst to AVBOB….
All injuries are documented and pieces of the human tissue and of all organs are disected to “determine cause of death”…. Will you still like to see this, if this was one of your relatives….
We all look at boms going off somewhere every night and it does not bother us that much – it is just a war…… Televising evidence of a murder to the extinct we are doing it right now in South Africa is TOTALLY FAR-FETCHED, embarissing and hopefully disturbing to most of you out there… Imagine a mother having to witness this type of content!!
God forbid I have to share the murder of my child on a “special channel on TV”….

How many of you have tried to open a docket for a burglary at your house, where the officer on duty TRIES TO WRITE YOUR STATEMENT of events, in the most simplest way they can – NOT WHAT YOU WANT TO STATE, they complete and make you sign… Because why, you get a Case number and you will purely just claim from your insurance?????
Most dockets openned don’t even go to trial Baas, because the evidence is just not enough and Prosecutors have to write endless remarks and questions to invetsigating officers BEFORE they can actually complete a “Klagstaat”….
I am NOT in the Legal profession, but was involved with documenting processes for the Integrated Criminal Justice System, and it was an eye opener then.
In the meanwhile, visible policing has become a circus……

As for the dockets etc, we as a country are fucked.
Our house got broken into a while ago, and I gave up halfway trying to help the cop get the exact details down, so I went for a general OK-ishness in it.
